Debbie Gale Mitchell, PhD

Science

Hi! My name is Debbie Gale Mitchell. I am an associate teaching professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at University of Denver. I have worked as a spectroscopist for the last two decades and have published more than 20 peer-reviewed publications in the field of spectroscopy.

As a chemistry professor, I am committed to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to make my courses accessible. I teach general chemistry, environmental chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and chemistry + art.

Bio

During rush-hour traffic on a Thursday afternoon in the mid-1980s, I was born in the back seat of a wood-paneled station wagon on the corner of City Park in Denver.

I have spent the majority of my life in the Mountain West. After Denver, I grew up South of Albuquerque in Belen, New Mexico and attended college in Utah. I currently live with my husband, two kids, and two dogs near Denver.

When I am not working as a spectroscopist, I love to hike with my family, read romance novels, and bike around Denver.

Education

I received my B.S. in chemistry from Brigham Young University. At BYU, my research focused on vibrational/rotational spectroscopy to measure energy transfer in the gas phase. I received my PhD in chemistry from University of Denver in 2013 (dissertation title: X-band Rapid-scan EPR). Since 2008, my research has focused on magnetic resonance spectroscopy, specifically electron paramagnetic resonance or EPR. In other words, I use very large magnets to study molecules.
